Although I had planned on concluding this series with part 4, it seems that may readers and listeners and readers have questions about the status of Angels, whether they are ethereal or corporeal beings. The Bible clearly tells us that He (God) makes his angels SPIRITS (ethereal beings), His Ministers a flame of Fire (beings of pure Energy.) So Angels are ethereal energy beings, not corporeal flesh and blood creatures. Yet they have appeared several times in the Bible seemingly as Men; as seeming flesh and blood creatures? How can we resolve this seeming contradiction? Please note that I used the term ‘seeming contradiction’ because there are no contradictions in the Bible. And this seeming contradiction does indeed have a satisfactory and beyond reasonable doubt resolution.
The following scriptures are a few examples of the many instances in the Bible where angels including the Angel of the Lord have appeared to people in the form of men.
· Mark 16:5 And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.
· Daniel 10:5 Then I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz: 6 His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude.
· Genesis 18:2 And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground…v 17 And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do…v 33 And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.
· Genesis 19:2 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom…v 4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter: v 5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
In their original state angels are invisible to man just as microwaves, x-rays and frequencies beyond the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum are invisible to man. In order for angels to make themselves visible to man, they have to move into the visible dimension by taking on visible shape and form of man. They appear to be men but does it make them flesh and blood corporeal creatures? The answer to that question is NO, it does not! They are still very much ethereal energy creatures only appearing to be corporeal. With advancements in holographic technologies, this complex subject becomes easy to understand. Take a few minutes to view the following video of prince Charles giving a speech at a conference in Abu Dhabi with the catch that he was not in Abu Dhabi at that time. In the CNN video of the 2008 Presidential elections, the reporter was beamed holographically into the News studio and communicated with the News anchor as if he was there in the flesh. Similarly Richard Branson gave a speech to his audience without actually being there in person. What is significant about this technology is that it creates a ‘virtual reality’; something appears to be in one form while in reality it is not.
Future advances in such technologies will give substance, make them feel solid, and give emotion to the holograms. The technology to create emotions via computers already exists and is being perfected in the present time. It will not be long before people will be able to travel holographically to any part of the world (and perhaps beyond) and interact with other humans as if they were actually there including touching, holding, and other types of physical contact that presently require both parties to be in the same geographical location. The following video is an animation of one such technology that will allow people to reach out and touch someone without actually being there. The reason I mention these technologies is to prove that though one may be able to send one’s hologram to another part of the world, and though the hologram may feel to be just as corporeal as the real flesh and blood person, the hologram will yet be a hologram, it will not be the real person. Specifically, though the real person can be intimate with a hologram that appears to be solid, have sex with it in other words, and even feel all the emotion that accompanies such a union with a real person, yet there would be no exchange of ‘seed’ or sperm because the hologram is not a real corporeal flesh and blood person and thus it does not have seed. It will not bleed because it has no blood, it cannot be cut because it is not flesh yet it APPEARS to be so.
In a similar manner, when angels appear to be men, they are still ethereal beings of energy, not corporeal beings of flesh and blood. So when angels appear to men as men, as for example in Genesis 18, they are something like a digitized holographic image that is seemingly made out of matter, it may actually be an example of energy being temporarily transformed into matter. However this is not their real form but more importantly their mentality and spirituality does not change; their do not assume the character of mankind, they are a higher order of creation and therefore they do not become man even though they may appear to be so. So though the men of Sodom might have lusted after the two angels, they thought were ‘men’, the angels did not lust after the men of Sodom. Despite countless false teachings that the sins of the fallen angels were the same as that of the people of Sodom, namely ‘fornication and going after strange flesh’ (having homosexual relations), as proven in part 2A and part 2B of this series, none of the sins of the angels recorded in the Bible come even close to that of the Sodomites. The reason is that though angels can assume human form, they are far different in their character than humans; even the ones that sinned did so for better reasons than mere fornication. So if someone were to ask me, are angels capable of having sex with people, I would have to say Yes, but qualify it that it would be no different than a solid hologram having sex with a flesh and blood person. Though the level of arousal and the emotion of the actual act may be the same as with another flesh and blood person, yet the act would not be exactly the same, and neither would the union result in a pregnancy, in offspring being born. Even though such a union is theoretically possible, I am of the firm belief that Biblically speaking the fallen angels did not participate in any acts of fornication with humans.
In Genesis 18, The LORD God, Jehovah God, appeared in the form of a man to Abraham but this does not mean that the Angel of The LORD is a man. Does this mean that the LORD God is a man? Of course it does not! If the LORD God was already a man, why was it necessary for Jesus to be born as a man? Why did He say “Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me”? As the previously quoted scripture proves more than adequately, Jesus (God) did not become a bodily person until He came (was born) into this world! Even though God who is Spirit has existed eternally as a being of Energy (Hebrews 4:12), He had to be born into the world to become a corporeal being. Though The Angel of The LORD might have appeared to Abraham as a man, God in that form was still Spirit, was still an ethereal being, not a corporeal flesh and blood being. Similarly the two angels who seemed to be corporeal beings to the people of Sodom were in reality still ethereal beings of energy, they were still spirits not flesh.
The confusion in regards to this matter stems from the fact that when the Bible portrays angels as men, readers have a tendency to equate their character, their properties to those of men, and think of them literally as men; however this is not a reasonable or Biblical conclusion. Angels, in the fulfillment of their tasks from God can appear to humans as men, and this is not necessarily even as a vision or a dream (although in the Bible angels have appeared to people in visions and dreams as well). Sometimes they literally appear to people in a seemingly very human form. For instance, we read in Genesis 18:1 “And the LORD appeared unto him (Abraham) in the plains of Mamre”… this in no way, shape or form should be taken to mean that The LORD was there in flesh and blood corporeal form. The meaning of the word ‘APPEAR’ in this scripture means to ‘See with the eyes’, but it also means “a spiritual observation and comprehension by means of seeing visions”. In a very real sense when people see angels, whether as seemingly human or in a vision, they are having a virtual reality experience. It is no different than a person hooked up to a computer, or in a dream, APPEARS to be having experiences that are absolutely real, and they are real, yet many of the participants in that experience exist only in the digital or dream world, they are not corporeal flesh and blood beings. Therefore they may APPEAR to eat, to drink, to have sex, do all things that humans do yet they are not human. If God wanted angels to be men, He would have made them men. They are a different species than man that interact with man in the fulfillment of God’s commands. But unless they had been born into this world as Jesus was through the womb of a woman, they cannot be flesh and blood corporeal beings; they can only APPEAR to be so.
I hope that it has been proven that even as man is on the verge of perfecting technologies that can give the perception of a real flesh and blood person being present where none is, so too can angels appear to men as men, even though they are energy beings, even as a hologram is ‘solid energy’. Angels are angels, and men are men; they both have a place in God’s creation but they are unique, men are not angels, and neither are angels men.
