A ball of fire envelops a building in what activists say is the besieged city of Homs. It is part of a surge in violence sweeping across Syria. World leaders are warning the fighting could have catastrophic consequences for Syria and its neighbours. Among those sounding alarm bells on Sunday - UN Secteray General Ban Ki-moon. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY-GENERAL BAN KI-MOON, SAYING: "The situation has deteriorated significantly and has become more militarised. Appalling violations of human rights continue to take place. The killings and violence seems to have taken on a very worrying sectarian character." Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said rebel forces were growing more powerful - and she called once again on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF STATE HILLARY CLINTON, SAYING: "The future to me should be abundantly clear to those who support the Assad regime. The days are numbered."
