Thousands of people are fleeing from wildfires that continue to burn out of control in the southern state of Texas.

Texas officials say 5,000 residents have been evacuated from the raging fires, which have already burned about 15,000 hectares of land and destroyed more than 1,000 homes.

The devastation in Texas and in much of the US this year through drought and floods will have  catastrophic  consequences for the world's food supply. With parts of Africa already in famine and many third world countries such as India and Pakistan and even China having their own food production crises, 2012 may turn out to be the year of the famine!
