The severe drought in Somalia and parts of Eastern Africa has resulted in a a FAMINE being declared. Till now the situation was considered to be severe but not dire. As the drought continues, combined with climate related problems that have resulted in much reduced crop yield worldwide, this situation could result in tragic number of lives lost, especially those of children, in a very short period of time.
UN declares Somalia famine in Bakool and Lower Shabelle
The United Nations has declared a famine in two areas of southern Somalia as the region suffers the worst drought in more than half a century.
The UN said the humanitarian situation in southern Bakool and Lower Shabelle had deteriorated rapidly.It is the first time that the country has seen famine in 19 years.... Read BBC report
